TWO-SIDED DESIGN
Woven in the American summer-winter tradition which results in two sides: light (summer) and dark (winter).
SUMMER SIDE
WINTER SIDE
TECHNIQUE & MATERIALS:
This two-sided flat-weave carpet combines 100% Argentine worsted wool hand-dyed in multiple dye lots using Swiss acid dyes. Using a Jacquard loom, the wool is woven through a Belgian linen warp. This 3-panel carpet is then exquisitely hand-seamed. The ends are finished in a soumak weave.
The two-sided weave structure is created by building two layers of hand-dyed worsted wool weft onto a very high tension linen warp. Beaten in place with a 75 lb. metal reed and beater, this carpet averages 3/4 lb. of wool and linen per square foot.
THE DESIGN:
The design on this flat-weave was created by Carolyn Carleton. Her "SAF" design is inspired by traditional Turkish prayer rugs where a peaceful space is bordered by contrasting columns.
PROVENANCE:
Bill Bottrell, renowned Grammy-winning songwriter, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist, commissioned Carolyn to custom create this carpet for his home in Mendocino, California.
Bottrell is best known for his Grammy Award-winning collaborations with Michael Jackson (with whom he co-wrote "Black or White," "Dangerous," "Give Into Me" ), Madonna, ELO, Sheryl Crow, and Shelby Lynne. Bottrell also worked with George Harrison, Tom Petty, Rosanne Cash, Thomas Dolby, and Starship, etc.
Recently Bottrell worked on the instrumentation and mixing for the last two Leonard Cohen albums, "Popular Problems" and "You Want It Darker".
Carolyn Carleton has been weaving for over 40 years. Watch her at work at her Jacquard loom in this video.

Today the carpet is owned by Justine Shapiro in Berkeley California. Justine is a documentary filmmaker and she was the original host of the landmark TV travel series GlobeTrekker. Learn more about her work at justineshapiro.com
